January 2024 – Events

Despite the recent passing of the Gregorian New Year, many Asians, including myself, are anticipating another festive season. As we prepare to welcome the Chinese New Year, my friend Jaslyn (jaslynmaia), along with her best friend, her rock and her business partner Stella (sweetie.seriman), the creative forces behind Iniquity, who host themed parties in Second Life (SL), are diligently working on an exciting event to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

Why a Chinese New Year theme? Jaslyn, with her knack for immersive experiences, explains, “Stella came to me with forums in which people were actively seeking Chinese New Year events in SL. It’s a blend of culture and fun – perfect for Iniquity, our pop-up party company.” As an Asian, the choice also reflects her personal connection to the holiday, celebrated with family gatherings and traditional rituals like Lo Hei (Prosperity Toss).

Jaslyn’s Asian roots are evident as she talks about her family’s customs – from temple visits to sharing the festive Lo Hei Cantonese-style raw fish salad, a symbol of prosperity. “It’s about tossing the salad as high as we can. The higher you lift the salad, the more fortune you garner for the year ahead” she shares with amusement. The conversation turns to the tradition of ang bao, where elders and married couples give red packets, symbolizing good wishes and luck.

When asked about the design of the event space, Jaslyn enthusiastically responds. “Stella and I are creating little enclosures, each telling a part of the Chinese cultural story.” From the guzheng to subtle elements like teapots and teacups, every detail is thoughtfully curated. Dragons, a central theme for the upcoming year in the Chinese calendar, feature prominently throughout the event space. Jaslyn’s meticulous approach reflects her desire to offer an authentic and inclusive experience.

Settled at a round table in the midst of the party area, I feel a tangible sense of serenity. With waterfalls centrally located in a lush, green landscape, I am overwhelmed with a sense of calm. Having visited Iniquity’s most recent party featuring a “Barbie” theme, I ponder how the lively music will intertwine with this peaceful atmosphere. Jaslyn anticipates a stark contrast between the serene setting and the vibrant energy of the party. “Our DJs are talented; they understand the need to blend excitement with the tranquil ambiance we’ve created.” She recalls the high energy of the Barbie event, aiming to channel a similar vibe while respecting the cultural theme.

Designing these venues is a labor of love for Jaslyn. “Each event is a new challenge. For the Barbie event, I built the Dream House from scratch, inspired by what I had seen in the movie trailers, at a time when the film had yet to premiere and its popularity wave had yet to catch on in SL. For Chinese New Year, sourcing genuine Chinese designs was a journey.” Her passion is evident as she talks about the research and effort that goes into each event, highlighting the importance of authenticity and avoiding clichés.

Jaslyn hints at future plans for Iniquity, together with her partner Stella and their upcoming collaborations. “We’re always thinking ahead, planning unique experiences that surprise and delight our audience,” she says with a spark in her tone. As our chat concludes, Jaslyn’s commitment to blending culture, creativity, and community in Second Life is clear. With the Chinese New Year event scheduled for the 10th of February from 6pm (at a location yet to be revealed, mark your calendars!), Second Life is set to experience another unforgettable celebration, masterminded by INIQUITY’s visionary approach.

This innovative approach bridges the gap between the virtual and real worlds, creating an authentic connection between the audience and the artist.

The auditory journey within “DreamVision” is exceptional. The club boasts a meticulously curated playlist of diverse electronic dance tracks, ranging from pulsating house beats to euphoric trance melodies.
